lovers, exhibiting a variety of creatures both familiar and exotic. After
a devastating loss of acreage and Asian birds from the aviary following
Hurricane Andrew, this zoo has staged a comeback. Explore more than 200
acres through self-guided walking tours and guided tram tours or from the
comfort of the air-conditioned monorail system. You'll get a look at more
than 260 species, from lions, tigers and bears to hippos, elephants and
komodo dragons. In keeping with its mission of conservation, the zoo
includes a mix of endangered species. There's plenty of chow on-site to
fuel your exploration, and the gift shop is full of animal-centric
trinkets.
Survey the artistic animal sculptures outside the Dr. Wilde's World
exhibit, get up close and personal with the wildlife on the curator's
behind-the-scenes tour, or observe birds in flight at the Aviary Complex.

In 1948 Miami Metro zoo can be traced back to a
small island off the coast of Miami. In 1967 the animal collection grew
to a stunning 1,200 animals. The Crandon ranked among the top 25 zoos in
the United States. The zoo received
worldwide
recognition fro the first zoo successful
captive birth and rearing of an aardvark.
In 1965-1970 hurricane Betsy landed
three feet of water on the zoo, which caused the terrifying deaths of
250 animals. After the devastation of the hurricane in 1965, there was
talk about creating a new zoo in Dade county. But however no serious
planning was made until 1970 when zoological society board became aware
of the availability of the Richmond Naval Air station property. On
December 11, 1970 the decision was made by the Dade County officially to
go ahead and 600 acres of land to go and build the new zoo.
